In March, three CDs came out here in Taiwan which stood out from the usual fare. Be sure to listen for them in the song rotation.Yolanda had a doll put on the cover of her CD, for reasons which I expect relate to her actual visage not being the conventional idea of ‘beauty’ here in Taiwan. Although she sports a rather prominent proboscis, she has, nevertheless produced a quite creative album.

Dominique completely changed her style from her last release, probably due to the lukewarm response it resceived. You can see the video for the first single from her new CD at http://myspace.com/taipei_taiwan

Yanzi is the only foreigner listed here. She’s a Singaporean (no pun intended). She was in the news just before the CD was released. She and her crew were accosted by terrorists(?) while they were filiming the videos in Egypt. Some suspect a publicity stunt …

Paul Ponnudorai – Part 2

I like this image of Paul much, much more than the manic visage they put on the cover of his new CD. That guy looks like some kind of psychotic ax-welding (no pun intended) serial killer.

On another note, a friend of mine is going to Singapore next month and I’m trying to persuade her to take in Paul’s show. Maybe get me an autographed CD in the process … (manic-fan smiley here)

The opening of the sixth season of the Sopranos featured a monologue by legend William Burroughs, equating each of the ‘seven souls’ with various characters of Tony Soprano’s biological or crime families. Quite interesting. I’ve uploaded it, and the text here includes elements which were edited out of the broadcast. Even so, it’s still incomplete – if you want you could probably locate the rest via Google.

The ancient Egyptians postulated seven souls.

Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is Ren, the Secret Name. This corresponds to my Director. He directs the film of your life from conception to death. The Secret Name is the title of your film. When you die, that’s where Ren came in.

Second soul, and second one off the sinking ship, is Sekem: Energy, Power, Light. The Director gives the orders, Sekem presses the right buttons.

Number three is Khu, the Guardian Angel. He, she, or it is third man out … depicted as flying away across a full moon, a bird with luminous wings and head of light. Sort of thing you might see on a screen in an Indian restaurant in Panama. The Khu is responsible for the subject and can be injured in his defense-but not permanently, since the first three souls are eternal. They go back to Heaven for another vessel. The four remaining souls must take their chances with the subject in the Land of the Dead.

Number four is Ba, the Heart, often treacherous. This is a hawk’s body with your face on it, shrunk down to the size of a fist. Many a hero has been brought down, like Samson, by a perfidious Ba.

Number five is Ka, the Double, most closely associated with the subject. The Ka, which usually reaches adolescence at the time of bodily death, is the only reliable guide through the Land of the Dead to the Western Lands.

Number six is Khaibit, the Shadow, Memory, your whole past conditioning from this and other lives.

Number seven is Sekhu, the Remains.

McCartney

A nice lady gave me this CD for my birthday. It’s “McCartney” by Paul McCartney, for those of you who don’t recognize the iconic cover, which was a photo taken by his late wife. Beautiful image – I believe those are cranberries …. This was, essentially, the album that broke up the Beatles. Recorded, as I know, at Paul’s farm in Scotland in his spare time.

One particular song from here which had been haunting me – Junk. Two versions uploaded here: the original Junk and Junk Singalong (ironically, without any lyrics).

Probably the most well-known track from this CD is Maybe I’m Amazed, which you will not hear here, even though it’s a great song … I have, however, uploaded a few of the instrumental tracks, includine Valentine Day, Hot As Sun/Glasses, Momma Miss America, and Kreen – Akrore, along with the previously mentioned versions of Junk.

R.E.M. “#9 Dream” ***1/2

R.E.M.’s first recording with original drummer Bill Berry in eleven years is a cover of an ethereal 1974 John Lennon hit, but it ends up sounding more like an outtake from Life’s Rich Pagent: While the drums are restrained on the track – the first single from the Lennon-themed charity comp Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur – Berry’s presence alone seems to have pushed the band back in time, most obviously in Peter Buck’s ringing minor chords. Sadly, this is a one-off: Berry’s headed back to his farm, and his three bandmates are trying, once again, to make a great album without him. (from Rolling Stone)
